Kapha is the dosha of water and earth, two heavy and dense elements. So, what does this mean about someone who is primarily Kapha? They tend to possess the greatest density, the greatest musculature, the largest features of the three doshas. Large bones, large eyes, strong constitution, thick hair, and a round, wide face are typical of Kapha.

The main qualities associated with Kapha dosha are moisture, heaviness, density, freshness, softness, and stability, like water and earth. When Kapha is out of balance, these qualities increase. What does this mean in terms of health?
PHYSICALLY, Kapha imbalances can include mucous conditions of the lungs and sinuses, water retention, diabetes, high cholesterol, and excess weight.
MENTALLY, one may be slow, inflexible, and unwilling to change.
EMOTIONALLY, they are “heavy and sticky” emotions such as melancholy, lethargy, and excessive attachment.
Ayurveda is based on the laws of nature, and to achieve balance, opposite qualities are applied. So, what to do when you are too heavy? Lighten up. Choose light foods, lose weight. Too sedentary, like not getting enough exercise? Get off the couch and get moving. Too humid? Bring dryness (drier foods, less oil). This is how Ayurveda works, and in many ways, it is really very simple.
Here are some more suggestions to help with Kapha Dosha imbalance
Kapha really benefits from stimulation to compensate for the dense, stable, and heavy qualities. Those with a Kapha nature tend to cling to the status quo and routine, and this only leads to stagnation and more imbalances for Kapha. Instead, seek stimulation from new sights, sounds, and experiences (the complete opposite of Vata’s need for stable routines!). Get up before 7 am and avoid naps during the day. Excess sleep increases heaviness. Stay warm and avoid humidity. Dry heat is helpful if you are congested. Perform a daily massage with wood therapy for the skin, silk gloves or clay powders. Clean up the clutter in your life, your house, your car, etc.! Clutter is another form of congestion. Exercise regularly, preferably every day; yoga, running, cycling, swimming, dancing, and aerobics are all good options. Spice up your meals: Never eat bland food! Avoid cold, heavy, and fatty foods. Drink spicy infusions such as cinnamon, clove, ginger, sage, black pepper, or chai. Eat your largest meal at noon to promote healthy digestion. Choose bright, warm colors like yellow, orange, and red. If you are attracted to the aromatherapy, spicy and light aromas are good options, such as camphor, patchouli, sage, basil, eucalyptus, cinnamon, mint, orange, and grapefruit.
Most importantly, Kaphas, by nature, tend to be caring, kind, and sweet. So embrace these gifts and share them with the world as you strive for a healthy and perfect balance: Using the beautiful gifts that were given to you!
